Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (3) vs Delta Hockey Academy Black (4/SO) U15
A penalty-filled affair needed a shootout to settle, with Delta Hockey Academy Black outlasting Pacific Coast 4-3 after a scoreless OT. After falling 7-4 to Edge School yesterday, Northern Alberta Xtreme flipped the script on Saturday, storming out to a six-goal first period and cruising to a 10-4 rout in the rematch. Corbin Blatz (4G) set the tone early and never let up, potting the eventual game-winner just over three minutes in and adding two more before the first intermission was even over. Augustine Paziuk (1G, 4A) was every bit as dangerous, factoring in on five of NAX’s first-period goals, while Yixuan Liu (2G, 1A) and Everett Whelen (2G, 1A) each opened the scoring for their side of the ledger. Edge got goals from Cohen Codner (1G) and a power-play marker from Charlie Formenti (2G) to stay within shouting distance, but NAX’s response was emphatic: the two sides traded zeros in the second before NAX put the game away with four more in the third, including a shorthanded exclamation point from Whelen. Kolter McHale (1G) had the lone Edge tally of the period. Elliot Needham made 39 saves for the win, while Edge used two goaltenders, with Eli Robinson taking the loss after allowing 10 on 30 shots faced.
Calgary International Hockey Academy (8) vs Edge School (4) U15 Prep
Calgary International Hockey Academy raced out to a four-goal first period and never relinquished control, opening its season with an 8-4 win over Edge School. Lucas Beaudin (1G) got things started less than a minute in, and CIHA piled on from there, with Cohen St Louis (1G) and a power-play marker from Mick Mantrop (2G) building the cushion before Miles Coy (2G, 2A) capped the frame shorthanded. Edge’s lone answer in the opening 20 came from Ian Kim (1G, 2A), who was involved in three of the team’s four goals. CIHA kept the pressure on in the second, with Dawson Densmore (1G, 3A) and Coy each scoring before Edge got a power-play goal from Josh Pomeroy (1G) and another from James Korber (1G) to cut into the deficit. Mantrop’s second and a Densmore marker in the third pushed the lead back to four before Nazar Shmatok (1G) closed the scoring for Edge on the power play. Charlie Terlesky stopped 24 of 28 for the win, while Edge turned to two goaltenders, with Bennett Tice making 13 saves in relief of David Tisdale, who allowed six on 18 shots faced.
STAR Hockey Academy (6) vs Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy (3) U17 Prep
STAR Hockey Academy made it two straight over Wenatchee, following up Friday’s 8-4 win with a 6-3 victory on Saturday. Cole Carter (1G) opened the scoring just 76 seconds in, but Wenatchee’s Benjamin Miglioretto (1G) tied it up before the first intermission. STAR pulled away in the second on goals from Benton Fuller (3G) and Brody Lukinbill (3G), who each finished with a hat trick in the weekend’s second meeting. Wenatchee briefly threatened a comeback in the third, with Hunter McIntosh (1G) and Liam Rebillaco (1G, 1A) scoring 116 seconds apart to cut the deficit to one, but Lukinbill answered right back on the power play to restore the two-goal cushion, and Mason Casorso (1G, 1A) and Fuller each added insurance in the final two minutes to seal it. Brendan Keskull-Moffatt (3A) was all over the scoresheet without finding the net himself, setting up three of STAR’s six goals. Logan Gardiner made 19 saves for the win, while William Duffy was busy in a losing cause, stopping 55 of 61 shots for Wenatchee.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (4) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (5/SO) U17 Prep
Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy completed the weekend sweep of RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna, needing a shootout to finish off a see-saw 5-4 win after RHAK erased a third-period deficit twice. Chase Lemieux (1G) opened the scoring late in the first, but RHAK came out flying in the second, with Will Tidsbury (2G) converting on the power play and Luca Vaugeois (1G) adding another shortly after to flip the score. Jacksen Cutforth (1G) made it three straight for RHAK before Alex Li (1G), who finished with three points on the weekend, got one back for CDA to trim the deficit heading to the third. Tidsbury’s second of the night restored RHAK’s two-goal cushion early in the third, but CDA stormed back with power-play and even-strength goals from Jagger Clark (1G, 1A) and Hudson Saltarella (1G) in a span of just over three minutes to force overtime. Neither side found the winner in the extra frame, and in the shootout, Li was the lone conversion to give Coeur d’Alene the extra point. Gunner Podollan made 43 saves in the win, while Satori Tam turned aside 38 of 42 in a hard-fought loss for RHAK.
Ulysse Academie (0) vs Stanstead College (11) East
Jeremi Duclos-Claude (1G, 2A) and Isaac DeFranco (2G, 1A) scored power play goals less than two minutes apart late in the first as Stanstead took a 2-0 lead into the break. Maveric Tisdelle (2G) and Mathieu Genereux (2G, 1A) added second-period goals to extend the Stanstead advantage to 4-0 after 40 minutes of play. Stanstead would dominate the third, scoring seven goals as they shutout Ulysse 11-0 on Saturday. Zachary Poitras (20/20) made 20 saves, including one on a penalty shot, to record the shutout while Kristian Tlstovic (3A) tied Duclos-Claude, DeFranco and Genereux for the team lead with three points each.
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (4) vs Edge School (2) U17 Prep
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg avenged Friday’s shootout loss to Edge School, jumping out to a three-goal first period and holding on for a 4-2 win in the weekend rematch. Grayson Speirs (2G) opened the scoring shorthanded, and Eli Wasylyk (1G, 1A) doubled the lead less than two minutes later. David Ring (1G, 1A) capped the first-period flurry with the eventual game-winner off a nice feed from Alex Delorme (1G, 1A), and Speirs added his second of the night early in the second on a helper from Max Sanders (2A). Edge got on the board late in the second through Noah Brade (1G) and continued to push in the third with a Kyden Bartole (1G) marker just 54 seconds in, but couldn’t find the equalizer despite outshooting RHAW 37-23 on the afternoon. DJ Mecas made 35 saves for the win, while Cohen Spencer stopped 19 of 23 in relief before Edge pulled him late in the third.
Northern Alberta Xtreme (10) vs OHA Edmonton (6) U17
Northern Alberta Xtreme won a track meet on Saturday, outlasting OHA Edmonton 10-6 in a back-and-forth affair that saw the lead change hands multiple times before NAX pulled away for good. OHA Edmonton struck first through Kole Imlay (1G, 1A), but NAX answered right back with goals from Holter Lefthand (2G) and Bryden Ezekiel (1G, 2A) to take the lead, before Kirk Girard (3G, 1A) tied it for Edmonton late in the frame. Darius Paradayil (2G, 1A) put OHA back ahead just 12 seconds into the second, but NAX responded with four unanswered, getting goals from Zuan Jenkinson (1G), AJ Dutchak (1G, 1A), and a pair on the power play from Wesley Goddu (1G) and Ethan Oldford (1G, 1A) to seize control for good. Girard’s second of the game briefly opened the third-period scoring for OHA, but NAX slammed the door from there, with Lefthand, Cohen Aquino (1G, 1A), and Benjamin Vialaneix (1G), the latter on the power play, closing out the win. Gage Genereux made 36 saves for the win, while Bronson Kasturi stopped 27 of 37 in the loss.
OHA Edmonton (3) vs South Alberta Hockey Academy (4) U17 Prep
South Alberta Hockey Academy turned the tables on Saturday, avenging Friday’s 6-2 defeat with a tight 4-3 win over OHA Edmonton in the home half of the weekend set. Lucas Fisher (1G, 1A) opened the scoring on the power play just past the six-minute mark, and Jack Boutilier (1G) answered for OHA Edmonton before the first intermission to level things. SAHA seized control in the second, with Jake Gerstenbuhler (1G) and a power-play marker from Jaxon Scherr (1G, 1A) sandwiched around a Finn Sample (1G) goal for Edmonton, taking a 3-2 edge into the third. Macen Ibach (1G) extended the lead in the third, and it proved to be the difference, as Kane Strudwick (1G, 1A) pulled OHA within one late but couldn’t find the equalizer. Carter Jarvis (2A) and Jaxson Weisgerber (2A) each set up a pair of goals in a losing effort for their respective sides. Cole Anderson made 28 saves for the win, while OHA Edmonton turned to two goaltenders, with Zayden Maclean taking the loss after allowing four on 35 shots before Rowen Germain closed out the game in relief.
Delta Hockey Academy (8) vs North Shore Warriors (1) U17
Both the Delta Hockey Academy and North Shore Warriors’ U17 contingents entered their Saturday clash having played one and lost one this season so far, making both teams fight to get the monkey off their back. Delta hit the ice as the sharper of the two teams, with the team in green keeping the puck within their possession in the offensive zone for a significant amount of time. Wynn Carey and Nate Anderson’s first-period goals gave Delta a two-goal lead heading into the second, before Luke Hammond scored for North Shore to pull them back within one. The Warriors had a push to tie the game, but ultimately, Toni Cipllaka’s shorthanded goal for Delta right when North Shore were on the cusp of the equalizer derailed their comeback efforts. After Cipllaka’s goal, the momentum shift was palpable, and Delta ran away with the game in the third period to pick up their first win of the season. Jack Delaney and Cash Field ended with two goals apiece for Delta.
Shawnigan Lake School (4) vs Delta Hockey Academy (8) U17 Prep
The Planet Ice Delta hosted two games on Saturday, with Delta Black’s U15 win earlier in the day followed up by the first U17 Prep game of the season between Shawnigan Lake School and Delta Hockey Academy. The game was evenly matched, but the clinical Delta power play ultimately made the difference. After Carson Brown (3G, 2A) opened the scoring, Colby Walker (1G, 2A) and Braelyn Nunley scored consecutive power-play goals for Delta. From there, Shawnigan Lake were stuck in a perpetual state of catch-up. Jackson Saskiw scored two in the third for Shawnigan, but Carson Brown added to his opener with two more, including a power-play goal late, to help Delta over the finish line with an 8-4 win.
STAR Hockey Academy (4) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (2) U17
STAR Hockey Academy and Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy’s U17 squads have three head-to-head battles this weekend to get their seasons underway, with Saturday the second, following STAR’s 4-0 win on Friday. Coeur d’Alene’s fight on Saturday was commendable, with Connor Ross scoring twice, but STAR were too potent when presented with the opportunity to strike. CDA led 1-0 into the latter stages of the first, but a pair of power-play chances saw Ben Caldwell and Matthew Atherley (1G, 1A) score on the man advantage to give STAR a 2-1 lead. Lukas Hamilton and Dallas Toth scored early in the third to make it 4-1, with Ross’ second goal of the game the closest Coeur d’Alene could come to scraping a result out of the second of their three-game weekend.
Okanagan Hockey Academy (5) vs Yale Hockey Academy (6/OT) U15
The U15 contingents of the Okanagan Hockey Academy and Yale Hockey Academy play twice this weekend to get their seasons underway, with Saturday evening a precursor to Sunday morning’s clash. The two teams only play thrice against one another in the regular season, getting two-thirds of their meetings out of the way starting with as evenly fought a clash as two teams have played in the CSSHL so far this season. Okanagan and Yale traded spells of possession and grade-A chances throughout, with Yale coming back from 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 deficits to take a 5-3 lead in the third period. Up two with under seven minutes remaining, any hope Yale had of throwing things in cruise control was dashed with a pair of goals from OHA. Jacoby Charette (1G, 1A) scored with 38 seconds left to tie the game at five, sending the game to overtime. OHA tested Maksym Rychkov (28/33) twice in OT, but after the Yale goaltenders made the requisite saves, Jase Chyld converted on a two-on-one, scoring his second of the game to seal the Lions’ victory.
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (8) vs Edge School (5) U17
RINK Winnipeg’s westbound road trip brings them to Edge School twice, and with Winnipeg hosting the Mountaineers in two weeks’ time, Saturday marked the first of four head-to-head clashes between RHAW and Edge in just the first two weeks of the season. If Saturday’s game is any indication, the next three games between RINK Winnipeg and Edge School will be a spectacle. The lead changed hands four times over the three intensely contested periods, with Jaret Otto (2G) opening the scoring and restoring Edge School’s lead with two goals in less than twenty minutes of play. Otto led the way into the second period for Edge School, but after his second gave Edge a 4-3 lead, RINK Winnipeg became the dominant force. After Julien Crook (1G, 1A) tied the game, Perry Nepinak (3G) scored two goals in the first six minutes of the third period to hand RHAW the game’s first two-goal spread. RINK Winnipeg wouldn’t sacrifice the lead from there, with a couple more insurance goals at the end giving them a comfortable victory to kick off the new campaign.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (3) vs BWC Academy (6) U15
Both RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna and BWC Academy seemed ready to get their U15 seasons underway on Saturday, considering the chaotically eventful first period that ensued almost immediately from the opening face-off. Isaiah Abdulla scored 67 seconds into a first period that ended with five goals on 30 shots between the two teams combined. BWC took over control in a second period that saw them outshoot Kelowna 20-8 and would pull away in the third period for a comfortable 5-2 victory.
St. George’s School (5/SO) vs STAR Hockey Academy (4) U15
St. George’s School’s U15 season started with a southbound inquest of Washington, with both Saturday and Sunday bringing STAR Hockey Academy and SGS together to fight. STAR took the game’s first lead on the powerplay, but didn’t hold it for long. Rhys Borisoff tied it before the first period was over for St. George’s and it wouldn’t stop there. Matthew Fu and Dominic Guizzo scored in the second to extend the Saints’ lead to 3-1 through two, a lead they’d hold until just shy of the halfway point of the third. In less than two minutes, STAR came storming back, grabbing a pair from Elliot Howe and Calvin Smith (1G, 1A) to square the score at three. STAR scored again to take what at one point looked like an unlikely lead through Mitchell Host, before Ansom Lam tied the game again for St. George’s. That forced the game into overtime, and after that saw nothing, the CSSHL would see its longest shootout of the season until now. The score remained tied at three after six shooters apiece before Ansom Lam’s goal for St. George’s was followed by Chris Liu’s (26/30) save on Cassius Powter (1G) to give the Saints a thrilling 5-4 win.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (4/OT) U17
The Pacific Coast Sea Devils looked to follow their Friday win over North Shore up with positive results against RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna with consecutive games against them Saturday and Sunday. After going behind by virtue of a Reed Witham (2G) powerplay goal for Kelowna, Rowan Hodgson and Lucas Ross scored ten seconds apart to give PCHA the lead. Following that, RINK Kelowna would have to keep chasing. Marcus Adams’ go-ahead goal late in the second gave Pacific Coast the lead heading into the third, but Cole Morley found the equalizer at the halfway point of the period. It didn’t take RINK Kelowna too long in overtime to seal the win thanks to a brilliant individual effort from Connor Groves (1G, 1A). Griffin Prairie Chicken picked up his first win of the season with 29 saves on 32 shots.
